New Family Moves To
Golfview
A pair of osprey has moved into the nest located at the lake in
Golfview and are busy collecting sticks and other materials to complete a well furnished nest for their comfort.  When and if the job is completed, we can expect to have them as neighbors for decades.  The birds are related to hawks and are sometimes known as fish hawks because fish is their total diet.

The mature birds are about 24 inches long with a wingspan near  36 inches.  If you are a male chauvinist, you will be unhappy to know that the female is the larger of the pair.  In many cases, a pair of juveniles will spend their first season together practicing housekeeping and will not breed and lay a clutch of eggs, usually three, until the following season .  The birds do not breed at all until they are three years old.

When there are young to be fed, the male fishes and the female feeds the young by tearing off pieces of fish for them.  The male, upon catching a fish, will dress it, by eating off the head and tail, before presenting it to the female in the nest.

Ospreys in Southwest Florida often  migrate to the Bahamas for the summer but will remain here if fish are plentiful.

More information about the birds can be had from the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation. Telephone 472-2329 and ask For Christy, the Education Director, or E-mail her at:  sccf@sccf.org.
