William F. McKeon  1933 – 2007
 
WEST SPRINGFIELD - William F. McKeon, MD of West Springfield passed away Tuesday, December 4th peacefully at his home.
 
He was born in Beverly, Mass, the son of William D. and Theresa (Garvey) McKeon.  His brother Richard predeceased him at an early age as a Maryknoll missionary. Dr. McKeon was a proud alumnus of St. John’s Prep in Danvers and Merrimack College.  He received his medical degree from the New York College of Medicine and a Masters in Public Health from Yale University.  He also served as medical officer in the US Navy.
 
Dr. McKeon was a physician for 20 years, practicing urology in Norwich, Ct. Among his many contributions was the establishment of the first hemodialysis unit in eastern Connecticut at the William W. Backus Hospital.  This unit was named for him upon his retirement from his medical practice.  He pursued a second career in public health following his graduation from Yale after which he worked for many years with Monsanto in Springfield, MA as medical director.
 
Bill loved golf and was a member of Springfield Country Club.  He pursued many passions in life, as he loved to cook, play the piano, was a talented singer and avid reader of historical politics.  He is remembered as an unselfish, giving person who quietly impacted the lives of the many people he met as a doctor, friend, husband and father.
 
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Kathleen (Moriarty) McKeon, his four sons, their wives and 8 grandchildren – Sean and Judith McKeon with their son Matthew of Doylestown, PA, Brian and Lori McKeon with their children Daniel, Emily and John of Andover, MA, David and Karen McKeon with their children Brigid and Thomas of Chicago, IL and James and Claudia McKeon with their children Ryan and Katie of Cohassett, MA. He also leaves a sister in law Lillian Pyne of East Haven, CT, brother in law John Hogan of North Haven, CT and many nieces and nephews.
 
The McKeon family would like to thank all the nurses and doctors at Baystate Medical Center– especially the cardiac intensive care unit and the nurses on the third and fifth floors – for their extraordinary care.
 
The funeral will be held at the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home Saturday at 10:00am with Liturgy in St. Thomas the Apostle Church at 11:00am.  A spring burial will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Beverly, MA.  Visiting hours will be held Friday from 4:00-7:00pm.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorial gifts be sent to Baystate Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice, 50 Maple Street – PO Box 9058, Springfield, MA 01102-9058 or to the charity of your choice.
