12/30/08

Barb Abar sent along this picture of a boat in one of Golfview's lakes.  We figure the person is spraying some sort of weed control along the edges of the lake.

Anyway, it's not something you see every day.

Bocce Update
We also heard from some folks who seem to know, that the bocce courts are being refurbished.  Apparently the Board of Governors included money for this project in the 2009 budget.  The figure we heard is $10,000.  No one has come forward with any details about this.  You can check the minutes of the Board of Governor's meeting to see for yourself how much discussion it raised.  Click here.

Our information indicates that the tree in the picture (see note from 12/24/08 below) with the yellow tape on it is being removed as part of the project.  We find it interesting that a tree can be removed for this purpose, but trees cannot be trimmed to allow for better lighting along Hole in One Circle.  Go figure.

We are sad to report that Skip Cherry, formerly of Sawgrass, passed away on December 9.  Skip and Irma lived at Golfview for many years.  About a year ago they sold their condo and bought a home up at The Villages.

We found this death notice, but have no picture to include:

We're not sure what's going on by the Bocce Ball courts, but they caught our eye as we biked around Hole in One Circle today.

It looks like work is afoot to improve these courts.

Perhaps someone in the "know" will tell us what the plans are.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...around Golfview.
Several buildings have their holiday decorations up and lit.

11/21/08
Work was completed on replacing the windows in the clubhouse this week.  Here are some pictures to give you an idea what's happening.

Outside view of the old windows.

Outside view of new windows.

Activity room, north window during replacement.

Putting the new window in.

By Thursday, the new sliders were in place.

These are category 3 doors.

In case you did not hear, the iguana that visited here a few days ago has been captured and taken to a friendly place.

Also, if you are not familiar with our nearby recreation center at Wa-Ke-Hatchee, here is a link to its web page where you can get information about the location, the programs that are offered there and a monthly calendar:  http://www.leeparks.org/facility-info/facility-details.cfm?Project_Num=0246

We are also posting a calendar for the month of November.  Click here.

Some recent pics from the circle.

The landscaping leading up to the first tee is looking good.
The practice area looks nice with the two newly planted trees.

This guy was looking for a new home this afternoon.  His travels took him to #109 in Pebble Beach.

He looked a bit nervous with the crowd that gathered.

Take a look at the new fencing that has been installed at the Golf Course Maintenance Building (southwest corner of Hole in One Circle).

Compare those pictures
with this view taken during
the installation process.

After 2 months in Wisconsin, it was nice to get back to Golfview and check out all the things that have been going on around here.
The results of my "blading" around Hole in One Circle are recorded below.  Click on a picture to enlarge it in its own window.  Use
your 'back' button to return to this page.

The first thing we noticed is that Hole in One Circle had been resealed and had some patchwork done.

(left) The south entrance has been resurfaced.

Included in the work was a modification of the speed bumps.  Some have been eliminated and those that remain have been reshaped.

(below left) This one is in front of St. Andrews.

The side view (below right) shows how the bumps have been sloped at both the front and back edges.  This one is near the entrance to Pebble Beach.

Do you know what building this is?

No, they really haven't modified the entrance to their building and they aren't trying to conceal their identity.

Answer below.
Yep, it's Saint Andrews, and the canopy was "parked" while they did some refacing work on the center stack.

The canopy was replaced on Monday, August 18th.

St. Andrews also had their parking lot resurfaced.  It looks pretty nice, especially if you had seen it in spring.
Preparations are being made to screen off the sand pile and dumpster at the golf maintenance building at the southwest corner of Hole in One Circle.

The posts are in, and panels would have been placed on Monday, but they are delaying this work to see what happens with Tropical Storm/Hurricane Fay.

(Below left) Side view of the screening project.

(Below right) Some of the beautiful color that we see down here at this time of year.

Here's a message from Ed DeCrosta:

Attached is a picture taken yesterday(7/23), not by me of course, of Pat and me, along with the Tithers, the Yanochko's and friends of theirs at HideAway Hills Golf Course in the Poconos for a round of golf and dinner afterwards.

7/16/08

Here's a message from Jim Markusen:

Far be it from us to say we are getting a lot of rain - BUT,  this catfish has either:
1. lost his way
2. is waiting for elevator to try to find some dry land
3. tired of waiting for Dennis Cannizzaro to show up at the causeway

Have you ever been "discombobulated?"

If so, you'll appreciate this sign near the security screening area at Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee.  Holly O'Connor snapped the picture on her way to San Juan, PR.

It designates a place where one can put a belt back on, retie one's shoes, and repack that carry-on.

7/11/08

Bob Patterson (Glen Abbey) had surgery on 7/10/08 for a "hip fracture". He will be in the hospital and then transferred to a rehab center. Don't know when they will be able to  go back up north to Canada or come back to Ft. Myers.  Please keep him on the prayer list. Thank you.

6/21/08

before he went to hospice.

We'll start today's walk-around with a quiz.

Which building has a "guest" parking space under cover?

Note:
A fortunately positioned green fog came along just as this picture was taken, obscuring some landmarks that would give a clue to the answer.

Click on any of these pictures to enlarge it.
Trimmers were busy today and yesterday working on the golf course trees and bushes.

The course looks very nice.

And while they were busy on our property, another crew was working on the dense overgrowth along the walking path next to the new construction on the west side (right).

5/17/08
Another walk around the circle this afternoon.

Reduced play has really helped the course get back into shape.

Next week they will be applying chemicals to control the Mole Cricket.

Please plan accordingly.
Here's Dave Baker, hard at work rerouting the downspouts at the pool side of the clubhouse.

The former downspouts were leaving dark stains on the deck.

Pebble Beach and Westchester get the "Cleanest Bike Rack" award this year.

One of our maintenance ladies will be leaving us.

Maricela Quiroz will be leaving Golfview in July and moving to Texas to
join her husband, who is already there.  She is responsible for keeping
St. Andrews, Inverness, Sawgrass, Westchester and Pebble Beach neat and
clean.  She also helps keep the clubhouse and pools areas looking nice.

If you wish to send her off with a card of thanks, send it to her using the
Office address:  14849 Hole in One Circle, Fort Myers, FL  33919.

More pics from Hole in One Circle.

April 29, 2008

I hadn't been on our deck in a while, so I walked out there to check the view.

I think the bench will be needing some repair soon.

The view is very nice, especially with all the flowers and trees blooming.

April 29, 2008

It was nice to see that they've closed the back tee box on number One.

This should give the grass there a chance to recuperate.

April 30, 2008

Work crews were busy trimming trees and bushes for two days.

For more pics of this effort, click here.

May 4, 2008

It was nice to see that the big dumpster had been removed.  Unfortunately, they did not take the sofa that had been thrown in it.

That sofa and some other items (child's car seat and a piece of luggage) were apparently too heavy to actually place in the small dumpster.

Yetch.

May 10, 2008

A crew was applying new sealing coats on the Sawgrass parking lot today.

It sure looks good.

May 10, 2008

Today was the day for Letter Carriers to have their food drive.

This scene was typical of the mailboxes around Golfview.

Note that the new phone books are here.  Is someone taking care of yours?

4/28/08
Another walk around the circle.  Check out the progress.

Looks like they're almost ready for water!!!

Looks like a very nice job.

To check on the progress since it started, look at the pictures posted at Picture Albums.

Painters were masking the railings at Muirfield.

They seem to be doing a very good job, with attention to detail.

Check out the new stair treads at Westchester.

When the walkways and stairs were painted, there was some splatter on the old stair treads.

Check it out (and the new bench as well) on the Westchester page.

4/25/08

Vince took a walk around the circle today and the pics below can serve to keep you up to date on what's going on around Golfview.

Work on refurbishing the pool area near Glen Abbey and Turnberry is progressing.

We think the workers needed to let the new surface "cure" a bit, so there was no activity today.

To check on the progress since it started, look at the pictures posted at Picture Albums.

Work is proceeding on the exterior of Muirfield.

For more pictures, click here.

A couple of kites were swooping around near Golfview today.

Click for additional pictures.

There's a new deadbolt lock on the side door of the clubhouse (near Augusta).

For more on clubhouse security, click here.

4/21/08

A wireless router has been installed in the Golfview Pro Shop.  This will allow Golfview residents to connect to the internet from anywhere inside the clubhouse or outside (say on the pool deck or picnic area).  If you have a laptop computer with a wireless internet capability, you will be able to get a high speed connection when you are in range of this router.  When the webmaster tried it this afternoon, there were actually four connections available.  The official Golfview connection is called "2WIRE786."  Two of the other signals were not as strong and seemed to be password protected.

4/17/08

Click on a picture to enlarge it in its own window.  Use your browser's back button to return to this page.

The golf course was closed today so that the greens could be aerated and sanded.  They look good.

And progress was noted on the pool refurbishing project as well.

4/16/08
Lots of progress today.

4/15/08

Attention!!! The pool at the northeast corner of the community is being worked on.  Here are the first pics.

The red tape on the gate gives early warning that the
pool is not in use.  See, no water!

For those of you up north already, you'll be glad to see
that we're experiencing a bit of a cool snap down here.

Work has begun on resurfacing the pools and pool decks!!

Water was pumped out of the pools starting early this morning.

A little while later, the dust barrier was installed and...

....work began on chipping away the tile caps.

Watch this space for further images of the progress on the pools.
