Golfview>Start>Picture Album>Sand Sculpting 2005

Fort Myers Beach hosted the 19th Annual Sand Sculpting contest at the Outrigger and Holiday Inn, November 11-13, 2005.  A friend of Jim Markusen sent along pictures from the first two days.  After working the Shark Shootout in Naples on Sunday, seven of the Golfview crew stopped off to see the finished work.  Here are some pictures of this year's entries.  Be sure to enlarge some of the pictures to see the intricate detail found in many of the projects.

The picture above was taken on Friday while the artist was at work.  The four at the right were taken on Sunday afternoon after the competition was complete.  Although this was a favorite among many Golfviewers, it did not make the final list of winners.

Again, the picture above was taken during construction.

And, again, although this work was a favorite, it was not mentioned among the winners.

Here is a picture of the detail at the rear of the sculpture.

The artist at work on Friday, creating a very clever game show sculpture.

Alas, this one was also not a winner.  But the Golfview team (right) turned heads Sunday.

Now that's a sand castle!!

Another favorite, Nature's Dance, shown left and above was not among the winners.

Pirates and buried treasure...sorry, no prize.

A NASCAR motif did not help this artist win.

(above) Can you spot the GV guys?

(below) Sea creatures are a big part of the show.

Music City (far left) and the "other white meat" weren't winners, but the lad in the middle (above) bringing me a beer was Best in Show.

The artist (left) is working on an extensive rendition of old Rome.  (above) The finished work as seen on Sunday.  (right) Another example of the intricate detail that some sculptors put into their work.

A good crowd of onlookers were seen admiring the work of the professionals and amateurs near the Outrigger. (above)

One very long sculpture displayed the various sponsors who helped to make the event possible (right).

OK, so which were the winners of this contest?  According to the News Press, these three took honors.

Second Place:  Robin Hood (left)

First Place, State Division:
An American in Paris (right)

First Place overall:
